The Fired Arts are fun for the whole family! Beat the heat this summer in our Splash! exhibition for some interactive experiences. In July and August, we are hosting several kid-friendly workshops inspired by the sea, the season, and our amazing collection of ceramic art and studio glass. Bring your kids, grandkids, and your own child-like curiosity and creativity to WMODA!
Our workshops are all led by visiting expert instructors, and specialized materials are provided to create a high-quality, engaging, and educational experience. They are fun for all ages, ranging from eight-year-olds to adults who enjoy hands-on activities. Each weekend workshop runs from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm with a break to enjoy a refreshing snack, and one of our entertaining and informative scavenger hunts around the museum, such as our new Mermaid Quest.
Build-A-Reef Living Reef Sculptures Class
On Sunday, July 12, we are partnering with Ocean Rescue Alliance International for a “Build-A-Reef Living Reef Sculptures Class” with their Educational Outreach and Program Coordinator, Lindsay Humbles. The “Living Reef” sculptures are created using air-dry clay and adding succulent fragments to teach participants about coral reef ecosystems, biodiversity, and conservation.
Summer Scent Lab–Candle & Wax Melt Workshop
On Saturday, July 18, Nini Montanez from Candle Nerds will be hosting a Candle & Wax Melt workshop. Her Summer Scent Lab will explore the artistic and scientific sides of candle-making. Learn about the chemistry and physics of candles while unleashing your creative spirit and choosing fragrances and colors to suit your individual personality.
Butterfly Magic
On Saturday, August 1, butterfly expert Kiki Sylvain will present a butterfly release at WMODA and share her extensive knowledge of the butterfly’s life cycle and their importance to our natural ecosystem. At SK Butterflies, Kiki breeds native species in her lush garden, where she grows a variety of host plants. The fleeting beauty of butterflies is preserved forever in Kiki’s framed artwork, jewelry, and home décor.
Play with Clay
Coming in August, Mirela Popovici will demonstrate how to throw bowls on the potter’s wheel, and pre-registered participants can enjoy a hands-on experience. During this “Play with Clay” discovery day, Mirela will guide a few lucky guests through a 30-minute session to make a small bowl. Mirela will fire and glaze the results and return them to WMODA for collection a week later.
