One of the most remarkable things about WMODA, beyond the brilliant Chihuly Macchias and Ardmore’s extraordinary ceramics, is the vibrant community that brings the museum to life. Sara, who manages membership relations, recently spent time with some of our members to hear what being part of WMODA means to them. While each shared a unique perspective, one sentiment resonated throughout every conversation: WMODA is more than a museum; it is a community brought together by a shared passion for art, inspiration, and connection.
Through their own words, we celebrate two of our dedicated WMODA supporters who make our community so unique: Ellen Schefler and Gail Sarfati. By sharing their favorite Fired Arts pieces and moments, why WMODA holds a special place in their hearts, and what membership at WMODA means to them, we hope you will be encouraged to join us!
With over 3,000 objects on display, selecting favorites is not easy, but we asked: what is your favorite piece or gallery in the museum?
Ellen Schefler chose the Hot Glass gallery as her favorite, highlighting Dale Chihuly’s brilliant glass art. While she knew it was a popular favorite with many guests, she couldn’t help but feel the same way.
Gail Sarfati chose the collection of works by Art Deco artist Clarice Cliff, not only for its beauty, but for the incredible story behind it all.
“While most people would likely respond with the magnificent Chihuly collection, I’m most attracted to the Art Deco period, so I never leave WMODA without stopping to admire the Clarice Cliff collection.
She broke the ‘glass ceiling’ in the 1920s and 30s in the UK with her vibrant geometric shapes and bold, bright colors, including oranges, yellows, blues, greens, and purples, for tableware. Her work saved the company from ruin during the Great Depression.
The ceramics industry was dominated by men, as were most industries, but she made a name for herself through her quality of work, her imagination, and her persistence, and was named head of the department, unheard of in those days.”
What do our members love most about their membership benefits? Gail cited advance notice of creative workshops, especially Chelsea’s fused glass classes; reciprocal benefits with NARM and ROAM; and the Museum Shop discount, which she admitted she has gotten plenty of use from! She loves buying jewelry and glass art for herself and her home, as well as unique gifts for others. Ellen shared how much it means to her to be part of this wonderful museum and the incredible sense of community at WMODA.
When asked what is your absolute favorite thing about WMODA, both members mentioned the amazing community of people it fosters. Ellen said, “It’s a beautiful environment. I so appreciate all the people and the staff of this museum. From the minute that you walk in, there’s a smile and there’s a lot of attention to assist visitors. You hear people say it all the time, you know, but that adds to the beauty and the feel-good vibe of being in this incredible environment.”
Gail emphasized what sets WMODA apart from some other museums, saying, “Community involvement! It’s more than a place you go to look at the Fired Arts on pedestals or behind glass cases maybe once a year. You go often – you participate. And it’s right in my backyard.”
Our members love enjoying WMODA with friends, spouses, or visitors from out of town. Each WMODA membership level allows unlimited visits for the member and one guest, with higher tiers allowing even more complimentary admissions! Ellen loves bringing people and can hardly stop talking about WMODA to all her friends. Gail loves bringing friends as well, but she’s most often accompanied by her “hubby,” who loves WMODA just as much as she does. “He particularly enjoyed the invitation to the GENVAS concert – Art, music, and snacks all together. It doesn’t get better than that!”
Becoming a member of WMODA means you not only enjoy amazing benefits, but you are joining a vibrant community united by a shared love of art, creativity, and meaningful connections. Become a WMODA member today and share in the warmth of our Fired Arts community!
