Build a “Living Reef” clay sculpture to grow succulent plants inspired by the fish habitats created by Ocean Rescue Alliance offshore in Hollywood, Florida. Join Lindsay Humbles, ORAI’s Educational Outreach & Program Coordinator, for a morning of ocean-inspired creativity and conservation surrounded by magnificent marine art in our Splash! exhibition at WMODA.

Coral Growth

This educational, hands-on art experience is designed for the entire family with children aged 8 and up. Participants will celebrate the beauty of the ocean and learn about marine ecosystems, specifically how corals grow, reproduce, and restore our oceans. Simulate coral fragmentation by adding a succulent as a “living fragment” to your clay sculpture. Just like these plants, real corals can reproduce by breaking into pieces and growing into new colonies.

Play with Clay

Enjoy the fun of playing with clay during this engaging workshop. Participants will design and build their own artificial reef using air-dry clay. ORAI’s marine habitats at Hollywood’s snorkeling reef can provide inspiration for your clay sculpture or you can create your own reef creature. All modeling materials and succulent fragments are provided for your work of art.

Mermaid Quest

While the clay sculptures dry and prepare to be taken home, there will be a short break for light refreshments. Explore the museum or try one of our fun scavenger hunts, such as the new Mermaid Quest created in honor of ORAI’s 1000 Mermaids Project. Celebrate ocean conservation, learn about reef ecosystems, and witness how small fragments can grow into thriving communities.

Cost

Registration for this special ticketed class on Sunday, July 12 is $60 per participant (aged 8 and up). Nonparticipating chaperones may accompany up to 3 children at no extra charge.
