10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Step into our sanctuary of creativity as we celebrate International Museum Day. This year’s global theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” serves as the perfect backdrop for celebrating the transformative power of the Fired Arts to bridge divides, ignite wonder across generations, and serve as a medium for social connection and shared expression. Join us for a full day of fun and community building from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm!
Our celebration centers on a spirit of solidarity, embodied locally through our collaboration with renowned artist Chelsea Rousso and her initiatives Unity in the Community and Amulets of Light. Supported by grants from the Broward County Cultural Division, now celebrating 50 Years and Forward, Chelsea’s workshops turned community members into creators, allowing them to find their artistic spirit through fused glass. Chelsea will be at WMODA throughout the day to talk about her projects and say farewell to the Amulets of Light exhibit, which closes on May 17.
The day also offers an exciting deep dive into the enchanting world of the kaleidoscope with collector Alan Tinter. Alan has spent decades acquiring a collection of 150 art kaleidoscopes and is eager to introduce WMODA visitors to this intriguing art form that blends science and beauty. Guests will have the chance to see contemporary designs and even capture their own kaleidoscopic memories on Lief Colson’s Digi-Leidoscope. The kaleidoscope remains a powerful metaphor for life, that with every small “turn” or change in perspective, new patterns and infinite possibilities emerge from diverse fragments. Read more about kaleidoscopes.
While exploring the museum, make sure to experience the striking Mega Kaleidoscope mosaic mural by Brooklyn-based artist Allison Eden. This seven-foot-square masterpiece was created entirely by hand, using a palette of over 1,000 glass colors and mirror mosaics.
Lori Brown, our expert graphic designer, has been inspired to experiment with making kaleidoscopic patterns in Adobe Photoshop. She started with one of Chelsea Rousso’s amulets of light to create an event graphic and is now trying out new software. Join Lori for some hands-on fun with patternmaking during our International Museum Day celebrations on May 17.
Join us on May 17 to celebrate unity and creativity through the Fired Arts and witness how community, amulets, kaleidoscopic wonders, and breathtaking mosaics can shine a light toward a more connected future for us all.
