Every great museum begins with a collector’s passion, but it achieves lasting significance through a curator’s vision. The Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts (WMODA) in Hollywood is a shining example of this symbiotic relationship between its founder, Arthur Wiener, and curator, Louise Irvine. Together, they have created far more than a museum—they have built an enduring cultural legacy that has transformed a private collection into a highly respected public museum.
Arthur Wiener’s journey as a collector began more than sixty years ago with the purchase of a Royal Doulton character jug of Merlin during a visit to London as a young law graduate. That serendipitous acquisition sparked a lifelong passion for ceramic art, and he built the world’s largest collection of Royal Doulton art pottery before expanding into other famous British and European brands, such as Wedgwood, as well as Ardmore’s vibrant ceramic art from South Africa.
Louise Irvine has spent the last fifty years studying, interpreting, and celebrating the decorative arts, beginning with her curatorial career at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where she researched the landmark Doulton Story exhibition. She spent a decade with the Royal Doulton Potteries, establishing their International Collectors Club, publishing reference books, and organizing exhibitions for their London gallery and overseas. Over the years, she has been acknowledged as one of the leading authorities on British ceramics and has traveled the world lecturing on the subject.
Inevitably, Louise and Arthur’s paths crossed when she provided historical details about many of his Royal Doulton acquisitions. Louise also introduced Arthur to British destinations aligned with his collecting interests during her collector tours and cruises, including London and the Staffordshire Potteries. In return, Arthur invited Louise and his new travel companions to his New York homes to enjoy his diverse collections. In 2014, he opened WMODA for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to experience the beauty of the Fired Arts, transforming a private passion into a remarkable legacy of public enrichment.
Arthur’s discovery of Dale Chihuly’s glass art opened him up to a whole new world of collecting, and the launch of WMODA included his blossoming Chihuly collection. Arthur was very proud to exhibit highlights of his growing Macchia forest at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, when Dale Chihuly was honored with the 2016 Visionary Award. Recently, Arthur and Louise were delighted to meet the master himself at his Boathouse Studio in Seattle to discuss a site-specific installation for WMODA.
In 2018, Arthur was named “Collector of the Year” at the inaugural Hamptons Jewelry & Objets d’Art Show, and he hosted a Chihuly Art on Fire reception at his Long Island home to celebrate. The Hot Glass Gallery at WMODA also came to the attention of the Corning Museum of Glass, and Arthur and Louise were invited to visit this global “mecca” of glass history, design, and science. Arthur loves visiting artists’ studios to learn more about the creative process, and his enthusiastic patronage encourages many talented artists in today’s American Studio Glass Movement. His generosity ensures their creations have a home at WMODA, while Louise tells their stories.
Louise’s unwavering commitment to sharing knowledge through her exhibitions, publications, and educational programs has inspired countless WMODA visitors worldwide to see familiar objects with fresh eyes and develop a deeper appreciation for innovation and human achievement in the decorative arts. Louise’s intellectual curiosity is matched by a gift for storytelling, transforming collections into engaging narratives that connect audiences with the creativity behind every object. Her expertise has enhanced the museum’s international reputation, and her dedication has earned recognition through a tribute from the State of Florida and the Museum Excellence Award from the Florida Association of Museums.
The collector preserves the tangible legacy of artistic excellence, while the curator unlocks its meaning, revealing connections across centuries, countries and cultures. Together, Arthur and Louise have shown that a collection’s value lies not only in its treasures but in its stories, and that a relevant museum is not simply a repository of beautiful objects but a vibrant, accessible place that celebrates human creativity and enriches countless lives.
