The Thinking Cap Theater

Welcome to Dania Beach

The Thinking Cap Theater group has moved in as our neighbor on the first floor at MAD Arts. TCT, a Broward based professional non-profit, thrives on experimentation and has become known for staging bold and boundary-breaking plays during the last 12 years. TCT’s first production at their new home in Dania Beach will be Fefu and her Friends, an innovative play hailed by practitioners and scholars as one of the most important American plays in the last half-century.

The writer, María Irene Fornés, was a pioneer of the 1960s Off-Off-Broadway movement, and an originator of site-specific and immersive theatre. The audience will experience the first and last acts of the play together in the Black Box theatre; for act two, however, they will be divided into four groups to visit various ‘rooms’ in Fefu’s home.

Set in the spring of 1935 at the New England country home of the title character, the play’s surface premise is simple and often comic: Fefu has gathered her friends to drink lemonade, play croquet, and plan and rehearse a fundraiser to benefit arts in education. Beneath this surface lies a probing investigation of friendship, gender, sexuality, class, and disability.

Fefu and her Friends will preview on Friday, June 3rd and will close on Sunday, June 19th.
