The Power of Love

Supporters of Lloyd Goradesky’s Let LOVE Guide Your Way public art project were guided to WMODA on February 8 to watch a private screening of a new documentary by Kirk Gillon, an award-winning filmmaker. Despite it being Super Bowl Sunday, there was a full house to watch Lloyd’s universal love and kindness project unfold from Ghana, West Africa, to Hollywood, Florida, where WMODA has a starring role with Louise Irvine.

Among the guests was Idelma Quintana, the Vice-Mayor of Hollywood, who thanked Lloyd for his contribution to the city’s “artscape” with his 30-foot-tall kinetic weathervane, which stands outside the Dolce Hotel opposite the Hard Rock’s guitar building.

The documentary film inspired a fascinating post-screening discussion with the panel of experts involved in the project. Steve Crane reminisced about the first giant weathervane he built with Lloyd in Las Vegas, and the challenges of moving it to Florida for the International Kinetic Art Festival in Boynton Beach. It now stands outside City Hall in the heart of Dania Beach.

Engineer, Sten Henriksen echoed how challenging and dangerous it is to build art on such a monumental scale and outlined some of the problems he had to solve. One structural solution enhanced the art by piercing “kisses” into the metal framework alongside the iconic hearts.

Lloyd Goradesky discussed his life-changing experience visiting West Africa with a U.S. trade delegation, and the government of Ghana’s interest in having him teach metalworking to students. They embraced Lloyd’s message of love and kindness and have asked him to build more weathervanes for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Developer, Sharon Sharaby, explained why he had chosen Lloyd’s weathervane to go outside his new Dolce Hotel, as he wanted an exceptional work of art to stand alongside the famous guitar building at the Hard Rock Hotel. The views of the weathervane and the nightly light show are spectacular from his rooftop bar.

Kirk Gillon welcomed the audience’s positive feedback and encouragement to help him complete the documentary film, which he hopes will be screened at upcoming film festivals to raise awareness of the power of public art to engage a community. Let LOVE Guide Your Way is an exceptional project that also highlights the need for more LOVE in this world.
