Step Forward

By Louise Irvine

Florida glass artist Rob Stern has stepped forward at WMODA with an exhibition of his fabulous glass shoes which are now for sale in our Studio Collection Shop. Stern’s Stilettos caused a sensation when they were first exhibited at the museum in 2021, and they starred in Deco Drive on Channel 7 News. It’s true what Cinderella says, “One shoe can change your life.”

Rob’s glass art is constantly evolving and changing, and WMODA has a marvelous collection of work made throughout his 30-year career. He is renowned for his Windstars, which shine in the museum’s new Hot Glass Gallery in Hollywood. His love of nature has long appealed to Arthur Wiener, who has acquired his leaf forms, shells, and coral reef sculptures for the WMODA permanent collection.

Rob’s work is also featured in the new Studio Collection shop at WMODA, which presents curated collections of art and design for sale. His brilliant Splash series was made while Rob was working at Petr Novotny’s famous glass studio in the Czech Republic. His monumental Stacked Stones tower totem-style in the new gallery above his goblets and vases adorned with hearts, leaves and flowers.

For many, Rob’s glass stilettos steal the show with their witty accessories and whimsical titles. They were inspired by his wife’s obsession and collection of shoes, including Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo and Alexander McQueen. Stern’s Stilettos can be purchased individually or grouped in a shadowbox display as shown here.

Stern’s Stilettos is the first installment of Rob’s Accoutrement series, which focuses on clothing, accessories and shoes as a means of self-expression. Look out for Rob’s ties and purses, which will be coming soon to WMODA

Rob is opening a new studio in Dania Beach at 110 NW 1st Street and visitors are welcome by appointment. [email protected]
