Spectacular Sundays

By Louise Irvine

Our first Sunday opening was a huge success. Guests of all ages had great fun with our new Tiny Treasures Trail, searching for miniature ceramics by Alex Meiklejohn throughout the museum. Young children were particularly excited when they spotted the tiny pieces. Many took home souvenirs as the WMODA Museum Shop was doing brisk business with Alex’s Halloween ghosts and Jack-o'-Lanterns. The new opening hours for WMODA are Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

On Sunday, October 26, Alex Meiklejohn demonstrated his incredible skill with clay as he worked on the potter’s wheel, throwing miniatures “off the hump.” Alex has been producing miniature pottery for over 35 years, and he has been featured regularly in magazines for dollhouse enthusiasts. His work is avidly collected around the country and at the WMODA Museum Shop.

Mirela Popovici was modeling one of Alex’s Halloween miniatures that she made into a necklace a few years ago. She was also demonstrating on the potter’s wheel and explaining how she makes her clay pumpkins. She invited several guests to have a go alongside her, and they experienced pottery throwing for the first time.

Mirela makes rustic-style pumpkins to use as containers or lanterns. She decorates some of them with teal glazes to help protect children with food allergies at Halloween. The Teal Pumpkin Project aims to make trick-or-treating safer for the 1 in 13 children in the United States living with life-threatening food allergies.

Thank you to Alex and Mirela for making our first Sunday opening so memorable. You can meet them both again at WMODA on Saturday, December 6 when we host our Fired Arts Fair.
