The Beauty of Bonsai

By Louise Irvine

Eli Cecil is receiving accolades for his exquisite glass sculptures of bonsai trees, which symbolize patience, harmony, balance and respect. The meticulous care required to cultivate a living bonsai tree means that it can also represent endurance, strength and wisdom. When given as a gift, a bonsai tree means friendship and loyalty. For the last few years, Eli has concentrated on capturing the symbolic beauty and aged appearance of bonsai trees in his glass art and his most recent works are now for sale in the Studio Collection at WMODA.

Much of Eli’s work orbits the dialogue of a conscious and sustainable future. His sculpture reflects on the balancing acts between humanity and nature and narratives about growth, causality, and the legacy left from one generation to the next. In 2018, Eli was recognized with the Artist of the Future award by the Imagine Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. In 2024, he won the Artist Innovation award, presented by the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County. This enabled him to travel to Europe and study with the top masters of Murano, where he learned new glassblowing techniques. Davide Salvadore, the 11th-generation Murano maestro, introduced Eli to the ancient Cane technique using glass rods to create delicate swirls of color that can produce a rainbow-like effect. A selection of Eli’s latest vases using this technique can now be purchased at WMODA.

For the last five years, Eli was the Creative Director of the Benzaiten Center for the Creative Arts in Lake Worth Beach, FL, founded by JoAnne Berkow, a highly regarded artist, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Besides creating her own work, JoAnne has spent most of her professional life promoting the work of other talented artists and her ardent desire is to educate the public about the importance of art in our everyday lives. JoAnne has also been a huge supporter of the future home for WMODA, which is being developed in Lake Worth Beach, Florida.

One of Eli’s roles at Benzaiten was to work on the visiting artist program, which creates opportunities for leading international artists to showcase their work in South Florida. These exciting events include a public demonstration with live music in a party atmosphere. Recently, Fabiano Zanchi, the famed Murano chandelier master, held a workshop at Benzaiten and Eli had the opportunity to make his first chandelier. Josh Fradis, another Florida artist well known to WMODA collectors, also participated in this masterclass, as can be seen in the video below.

Eli was able to catch up with one of his Murano friends, Riccardo Ferro, at the opening of the Carved in Glass exhibition at WMODA. This summer, he has also embarked on a new venture, opening his own studio in his home state of Maryland. We wish him success and look forward to seeing him again soon on his next visit to Florida.

“Glass is the perfect medium to capture motion. It is the fluid nature of hot glass that allows me to create and freeze a moment in time forever.” Eli Cecil
