The Enchanted Garden

Louise Irvine

What if flowers could talk, trees could tell stories, and plants could make music? What if you could wander through a garden where blossoms never fade, birds are made of glass, and imagination grows wild? Welcome to the Enchanted Garden, a captivating new exhibition at WMODA, where nature’s wonders meet the extraordinary creativity of artists from Florida and around the world. Inspired by the beauty of botanical gardens, the ancient symbolism of the Tree of Life, and the whimsical world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, this imaginative exhibition transforms the museum into a fantastical landscape of flowers, foliage, and artistic surprises.

A Garden of Glass

Few artists have captured nature’s exuberance as spectacularly as internationally acclaimed glass master Dale Chihuly. For more than six decades, Chihuly has transformed molten glass into extraordinary creations inspired by the colors, rhythms, and organic forms of flowers and gardens. His spectacular Macchia, Persians, Venetians, and Ikebana designs celebrate the natural world’s boundless beauty.

Florida glass artist Rob Stern explores the delicate relationship between humanity and nature through his forest of glass leaves. Inspired by fifteen years of studying the intricate structures of foliage, Stern magnifies nature’s smallest details into dramatic glass creations using traditional Murano techniques. Recently, he has been combining wood with glass to create new varieties of exotic plants with brilliant flowers.

The tropical splendor of Florida blossoms in the luminous glass orchids of Grace Chepenik, whose delicate, translucent petals capture and refract light with breathtaking elegance. Meanwhile, Eli Cecil celebrates the ancient art of bonsai through exquisite glass trees that symbolize patience, harmony, and the delicate balance between humanity and the environment.

For Juan Giraldo, the garden becomes a glowing sanctuary. Combining the precision of industrial design with the artistry of glassmaking, he handcrafts geometric light sculptures and terrariums enclosing botanical forms. These illuminated environments blur the boundaries between nature, architecture, and decorative art, inviting visitors to discover entire worlds within glass.

Imagination Takes Root in Europe

From the canals of Venice to the forests of France, nature has inspired arts and crafts to blossom in Europe for centuries.  Anna Paola Cibin celebrates Venice’s rich artistic traditions with sumptuous silk velvet paintings, shimmering Murano glass, and the enchantment of Italian gardens. Her whimsical Funny Birds, created in collaboration with master Murano glassblowers, populate a magical aviary where feathers, flowers, and fantasy flourish.

French artist Jerome Reine transforms gnarled tree branches and fallen wood into visionary works of art, carving and polishing nature’s discarded treasures into elegant wooden purses, luxury fashion accessories, and jewelry boxes. His extraordinary work balances nature’s raw chaos with refined human craftsmanship.

The art of French beading dates to the Renaissance, and Svetlana Sapegina continues this tradition, creating hyper-realistic floral sculptures using seed beads and wire. She has also developed a new Russian bead weaving technique named after her native country. Her work merges botanical accuracy with jewel‑like brilliance and has won awards across the United States and Europe.

The Tree of Life: Where Nature and Myth Meet

Deep within The Enchanted Garden, the legendary Tree of Life offers a powerful reminder of the connections between all living things. One of humanity’s most enduring symbols, the Tree of Life represents growth, renewal, and the eternal cycles of nature. Its roots reach into the earth while its branches stretch toward the heavens, uniting the natural and spiritual worlds. This ancient symbolism finds vibrant expression in the extraordinary artistry of Ardmore Studio in South Africa. Renowned for its exuberant ceramic creations featuring exotic animals, birds, and flowers, Ardmore captures the untamed beauty and vitality of the African savanna.

The studio’s imaginative designs have also inspired luxurious home furnishings and textiles, including the spectacular Baobab wallpaper collection created in collaboration with the celebrated British design house Cole & Son. Known as Africa’s Tree of Life, the magnificent baobab becomes a fantastical gathering place for the creatures of the savanna, celebrating nature’s abundance and interconnectedness.

Down the Rabbit Hole into Wonderland

Things become curiouser and curiouser as visitors enter the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland, where roses are painted red, flowers have opinions, and nothing is quite what it seems. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories, Florida artist and fashion designer Chelsea Rousso brings Wonderland to life through spectacular wearable glass art. Her imaginative kiln-formed glass costumes transform familiar characters, including the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, and the White Rabbit, into dazzling sculptural fantasies. Originally created for fashion performances, these extraordinary glass fashions combine artistry, storytelling, and a delightful sense of the impossible.

In Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, Alice encounters a remarkable garden of talking flowers, each with its own personality and plenty to say. Their witty conversations raise an intriguing question: What if plants really could communicate with us?

Listen to the Secret Music of Plants

In one of the exhibition’s most surprising experiences, visitors can discover the garden isn’t as silent as it seems. Multimedia artist and composer Dave Rosenthal invites audiences to listen to the hidden rhythms of living plants through an interactive installation combining art, music, and technology.

Using a fascinating process known as biosonification, Rosenthal translates electrical signals from plants into musical sounds. Sensors detect changes in a plant’s electrical activity, which are converted into digital musical information and interpreted by synthesizers. The result is an ever-changing botanical soundscape influenced by the plant’s biological activity and surrounding conditions. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the plants and listen for changes in the music, experiencing an extraordinary dialogue between nature and technology.

Can a plant make music? Can a garden perform a symphony? At The Enchanted Garden, visitors are invited to listen and decide for themselves.
