Glass is Hot at WMODA

Louise Irvine, our Executive Director & Curator, will fire your imagination with the museum’s diverse displays of hot glass in her enlightening talks at 1:00 pm on May 17 and 18 during our International Museum Day Celebration. There are many different styles of glass art in the WMODA collection, from blown glass by Chihuly to fused glass by Toots Zynsky, to cold-working by the Ferro brothers and flame-work by Paul Stankard. Louise will explore the connections between Murano glass from Italy and the American Studio Glass Movement. Louise’s talks are included with regular museum admission.

Fused Together through Glass Art

Chelsea Rousso, fashion designer, author, educator and fused glass artist, will be at WMODA all day on Saturday, May 17, to share her passion for fused glass and show how it brings people together, as in her spectacular Unity in the Community · Transparency Through Glass project.

Bowled over by Glass Art Workshop

On Saturday morning, Chelsea will teach a workshop to make Fazzoletti-style bowls inspired by the impressive Chihuly Macchia collection at WMODA. This workshop has sold out, so let us know if you would like details of Chelsea’s future workshops.

Miniature Murano Masterpieces

Murano glass beads are miniature masterpieces and we have a new appreciation for this art form thanks to Tracy Chevalier’s best-selling novel The Glass Maker. Discover more on Sunday, May 18, when WMODA explores the intricate art of bead making during International Museum Day.

Meet the Artists and Designers

Meet Diane and Mauro Genaretti from Italianissimo who will present gorgeous jewelry made from glass beads which they have collected on their travels to Murano.

Meet local artist, Mirela Popovici who has introduced the Venetian lamp-working technique to her Hollywood studio. She makes beautiful glass bead necklaces and earrings.

Meet local artist Wendy Chercass, who admits to being a “beadaholic.” She weaves intricate bracelets with tiny beads.

You can purchase a wide variety of bead work by these talented artists in the WMODA Museum Shop.

All sales benefit the educational programs at WMODA which is a 501c3 not-for-profit museum.

Make a Macchia

Throughout the weekend, you can have fun making a Chihuly-inspired artwork with a coffee filter, marker pens, and spray starch. It’s a great activity for families and children and you can add your finished piece to our River of Glass and Light installation.
